The 2026 FBLA Middle School / High School National Leadership Conference (NLC) runs June 29 – July 2, 2026 at the Henry B. González Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. With approximately seven weeks remaining, the operational rhythm of a competition chapter shifts from “preparing material” to “executing logistics.” This article documents the checklist competitors, chapter advisors, and parents actually use in the final stretch.
Week-by-Week Countdown
The 49 days between today and the NLC opening session break into three operational phases: commit (weeks 7-5), polish (weeks 4-2), and travel (week 1).
Weeks 7-5 (now through early June): Commit
- Confirm NLC registration is locked in your state association portal — the qualifying deadline closes 30 days before NLC for most states.
- Pre-submitted material for production / project events must be uploaded to the FBLA event submission portal. Late uploads are not accepted.
- Hotel and travel: book through the official FBLA-PBL housing portal for the negotiated rates. The block typically fills 45 days before the conference.
- Chapter advisors finalize chaperone roster (1 adult per 10 students minimum) and Code of Conduct paperwork.
Weeks 4-2 (early to late June): Polish
- Objective-test events: shift from learning new material to timed practice. Standard format is 50 minutes / 100 questions, so the target pace is 30 seconds per question.
- Presentation events: rehearse with strict 7-minute timer plus 3-minute Q&A simulation. Record yourself and watch back — pacing and eye contact are scored as much as content.
- Team events: lock in role division (presenter, slide handler, Q&A lead) and run two full dress rehearsals.
- Confirm business professional dress code: suit, dress shirt, tie or business blouse, closed-toe dress shoes. Pack two suits — the schedule has limited time to launder.
Week 1 (June 22 onward): Travel
- Print your event schedule from the FBLA app or member portal — assume Wi-Fi at the convention center will be slow during competition blocks.
- Pack lightly: business suits, casual evening wear for chapter events, comfortable shoes for the convention floor, a portable charger, and any pre-submitted project printouts.
- Arrive Sunday June 28 or Monday June 29 morning. The opening session is Monday evening.
- Bring photo ID, FBLA membership card, and chapter advisor contact info on paper as a backup.
The 4-Day NLC Rhythm
The conference itself follows a fairly stable annual rhythm. Monday is travel + opening session + state delegation parade. Tuesday and Wednesday are the heart of competition: objective tests scheduled in 50-minute blocks across multiple ballrooms, with presentation events running concurrently in dedicated judging rooms. Thursday is the Awards of Excellence Recognition Session, where the top-10 placers in each event are called to the stage.
Beyond competition, the NLC offers 50+ leadership workshops, a college fair with 100+ admissions reps, and corporate-sponsored networking events. Students without competition events scheduled in a given block should attend workshops — many compete for early-career business jobs and internships at NLC.
What Past NLC Attendees Underestimate
Three things consistently catch first-time NLC attendees off guard. First, the volume: 14,000+ students in one venue means competition rooms are packed and lines for food, registration, and elevators are long. Allow 30 minutes between back-to-back events.
Second, the dress code is strictly enforced. Students reported for dress-code violations are sometimes barred from individual events. Bring a backup tie, spare blouse, and polish for shoes.
Third, the social schedule is full. There are chapter dinners, mixer events, and the national officer election rallies most evenings. Plan for 4-5 hours of sleep on Tuesday/Wednesday nights — that’s the realistic pace.
Cost Snapshot
The all-in cost for a typical NLC attendee falls in the $1,200 – $2,500 range: $200-$500 NLC registration, $150-$250/night hotel × 4 nights, airfare ($300-$600 from most U.S. airports), and meals not provided by the conference. Many chapters offset costs through fundraising, school activity funds, or corporate sponsorship.
