How to Register for FBLA
Membership is registered through your school’s local chapter — not directly with the national office. National dues are $10 per student per year, plus state and local chapter fees; most members pay a region-specific total. Confirm the current membership and event deadlines with your chapter adviser.
Two registration processes, one chapter advisor
Joining FBLA and competing at FBLA events are two separate registration processes — both routed through your chapter advisor, neither done directly with the national office.
First, you become an FBLA member by paying national, state, and local dues through your school chapter. Then, separately, you register for specific competitive events through your chapter advisor and pay any conference attendance fees. Understanding this distinction is critical: paying membership dues alone does not register you for events, and event-registration deadlines come months before the conferences themselves.

Membership Registration
The first process. Your chapter advisor enrolls you in the FBLA national database through my.fbla-pbl.org and submits the combined dues payment. Typical timeline: September through the March 1 deadline.
Competitive Event Registration
The second process, only after active membership is confirmed. Event selection runs October–December, with separate conference registration fees ($100–500) and pre-submission deadlines weeks before each event.
From “interested” to “active member” in five steps
The walk-through every prospective member should know before reaching out. Steps 1–4 typically take 1–4 weeks each; step 5 unlocks eligibility for SLC and the summer NLC. Plan for the full process to finish well before the March 1 dues deadline.
Find your school’s chapter
Check with business teachers, CTE department, or the activities office. The FBLA national directory lists active chapters by state.
Talk to the chapter advisor
The faculty advisor explains the chapter’s enrollment timeline and any local membership requirements (intro meeting, brief application, etc.).
Pay the combined dues
Single combined payment of the confirmed chapter total covers national ($10) + applicable state and local dues dues. Submit by March 1.
Advisor submits enrollment
Advisor enters your name into the my.fbla-pbl.org portal. This is the step that activates competitive event eligibility.
Log in & verify
Log in to my.fbla-pbl.org with advisor-provided credentials. Profile shows chapter, state, active year. You’re ready for events.
Find your school’s chapter (or charter a new one)
Check whether your school already has an active FBLA chapter. The fastest method: ask the business teachers, the career and technical education (CTE) department, or the activities office. The FBLA national directory at fbla.org lists active chapters by state and region.
If no chapter exists at your school, you can charter a new one — this requires a faculty advisor and a minimum of 10 student members. See § 05 for the chartering path.
Contact the chapter advisor
Once you have identified the chapter, contact the faculty advisor directly. The advisor will explain the chapter’s enrollment timeline, dues schedule, and any local membership requirements (some chapters require attending an introductory meeting or completing a brief application).
This is also where you learn the combined dues amount your chapter collects — most chapters bundle all three tiers into a single check or transfer.
Pay national, state, and local dues
FBLA dues are structured in three tiers, coordinated through the chapter adviser: national dues are $10 per student per year; state, local and conference charges are additional and vary. Confirm your actual total before paying.
Most chapters collect a single combined payment (amount confirmed by your chapter) covering all three tiers. Dues must be paid by March 1 for a student to be eligible for spring state competitions and the summer National Leadership Conference (NLC). Missing this deadline forfeits competitive eligibility for that membership year.
Advisor enrolls you in the national portal
After dues are collected, the chapter advisor enters your name into the national FBLA member database through the official portal at my.fbla-pbl.org. This is the critical step that activates your eligibility for competitive events — without it, paying dues alone does not register you for SLC or NLC.
Most chapters batch enrollments and submit them in waves between September and March 1.
Verify your enrollment and pick events
After your dues are submitted, verify your active membership by logging into my.fbla-pbl.org with the credentials your advisor provides. Your member profile will show your chapter, state, and active membership year.
This profile becomes essential for accessing competitive event registration, conference housing, and study materials throughout the year. Event selection is a separate, later step — typically October–December — with its own conference registration fees ($100–500).
Who can register for FBLA?
The High School membership bylaws do not impose a blanket U.S. citizenship or permanent-residency requirement. Enrollment, chapter membership, event eligibility and regional access must each be confirmed.
Schools & active chapters
Students should confirm their school chapter’s membership conditions and the event-specific qualification rules. A general U.S. citizenship or permanent-residency restriction is not stated in the High School membership bylaws.
DoDEA Schools Worldwide
Department of Defense Education Activity students at U.S. military bases overseas are eligible regardless of citizenship — DoDEA operates 160+ FBLA chapters globally on U.S. military bases.
China Mainland Direct
The current availability of a mainland China direct route is not established by the membership bylaws. Confirm with FBLA and the relevant regional programme before making an entry plan.

National dues are currently $10. Other fee ranges and the dated 2026 calendar below are historical references, not a current quotation or registration deadline. The 2027 MS/HS NLC is 23–26 June in Columbus, Ohio.
What you need to charter a chapter
Chartering a new FBLA chapter is straightforward in paperwork but requires two firm institutional commitments: a faculty advisor with bandwidth to coach event prep, and an initial cohort of 10 student members willing to pay dues for the first year.
Submit the charter application through the same national portal at my.fbla-pbl.org. The state FBLA association coordinator typically reviews and approves the application; international school charter applications are reviewed case-by-case by FBLA-PBL.

International student routes — the short answer
A blanket U.S. citizenship or permanent-residency requirement is not stated in the High School membership bylaws. International students must confirm membership, chapter and event rules for their own route.

The six mistakes that disqualify registrations
Most failed registrations come from the same handful of missteps — paying directly to FBLA national, missing the March 1 deadline by days, or assuming membership covers event registration too. Avoid them with these paired do / don’t reminders.
Common registration mistakes
- Don’t pay FBLA-PBL directly FBLA does not accept individual registrations from the national office. All dues route through the chapter advisor via my.fbla-pbl.org.
- Don’t assume membership covers events Membership dues and competitive event registration are two separate processes with two separate fees. Paying dues alone does not enter you in any event.
- Don’t miss March 1 by even a day Late dues forfeit competitive eligibility for the entire membership year — no SLC, no NLC. Some chapters maintain rolling membership for non-competitive students.
- Don’t wait until February to start Most chapters batch enrollments and need 1–2 weeks of administrative buffer. Starting in January risks missing the deadline.
- Don’t submit project materials late Production events require pre-submitted materials weeks before the conference. Late submissions are not accepted, even with a paid registration.
- Don’t ignore state-specific requirements Some state associations have additional eligibility criteria (GPA minimums, attendance, prior coursework). Your state coordinator’s site is the authority.
The proven registration playbook
- Route everything through your advisor Your chapter advisor handles dues collection, portal enrollment, and event registration. Confirm your name appears in their submission batch.
- Plan membership + event registrations separately Treat them as two distinct workflows on your calendar: dues by March 1, event submissions weeks before each conference.
- Aim for January for dues payment Pay by late January. This gives the advisor a 4–6 week buffer to submit enrollments and resolve any portal issues.
- Verify enrollment by logging in After your advisor submits enrollment, log into my.fbla-pbl.org and confirm your active membership year shows the current cycle.
- Track event deadlines by event Each competitive event has its own pre-submission deadline in the Competitive Events Guidelines at connect.fbla.org. Build a separate calendar per event.
- Confirm state-specific rules with your advisor Your chapter advisor knows your state association’s specific eligibility requirements and conference logistics. Ask early, not at deadline.
01 Can I register directly with the FBLA national office? +
No. Membership registration must go through your school chapter. FBLA does not accept direct individual registrations from the national office — all members are enrolled by their chapter advisor through the my.fbla-pbl.org portal.
If your school has no chapter, you can either charter a new one (requires a faculty advisor and 10+ students — see § 05) or transfer to a school with an active chapter.
02 How much does it cost to join FBLA in total? +
Most students pay a combined $10 national dues plus applicable state and local dues. Conference registration, travel and accommodation are additional; confirm the actual amount with your chapter rather than using historical ranges as a current quotation.
03 What if I miss the March 1 dues deadline? +
Missing the March 1 dues deadline typically forfeits eligibility for spring state competitions and the summer NLC for that membership year. Some chapters maintain rolling membership for students joining mid-year for general FBLA programming, but competitive event eligibility specifically requires dues paid by March 1.
04 Can an international student in China register? +
The membership bylaws do not impose a blanket U.S. citizenship or permanent-residency rule. China route availability still needs confirmation with FBLA and the regional programme. The following are possible school contexts, not guaranteed entry routes: a school with an active FBLA chapter, an eligible DoDEA chapter, or an international school applying for a charter. Event and regional rules still apply.

05 Do I have to register for competitive events when I join? +
No. Event selection is a separate, later step — typically October through December for the spring competition season. Many students participate in FBLA for the leadership programming and chapter activities without competing in events; competition is optional.
06 How do I pay if my school doesn’t handle FBLA dues directly? +
All FBLA dues are submitted by the chapter advisor through the national portal — students do not pay FBLA-PBL directly. If your school requires students to pay the advisor individually, most chapters accept cash, check, or school-account transfer. Some chapters fundraise to cover dues for students with financial need.
